Kwajalein Seabee Album
Typhoon Pictures 1951
Early in the 1950s the U.S.Navy and U.S.Airforce began building up their forces
on the island of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. For the young military
people on the island it was considered the bottom of the barrel where duty
stations were concerned. It was a year out of our lives stuck on a very small
island in the Pacific ocean. Kwajalein was about 2 miles long and ½ mile wide
at the widest point. The U.S.Navy Seabees were responsible for the maintenance
of the island's utilities and for building dependent housing. This site is dedicated
to the young men that shared the Kwaj military duty experience in the early 1950s.
This Seabee was an 18 year old telephone installer / repairman trying to keep an
old common battery telephone system together until a new dial system could be put in place.
Special thanks to Bill Heflin and Bob Markey who were kind enough to share their
pictures with us.
